Miles EV ZX40 Conversion

Postby mrcshbs » Sat May 09, 2009 12:00 pm

Hi Guys,

I’ve been pretty busy the past few weeks, I bought a Miles ZX40 EV… originally 48V system. The car was pretty solid and light weight… but the top speed was the biggest problem.

I took the EV completely apart, I meant it… everything came off… so I decided to start this car again from scratch and correct the many mistakes made by the designer.

I took a look at the transmission and it’s locked in one gear, there isn’t even anything else, it’s just one gear system. So in order to get higher speeds you need to get a higher RPM.. no way around that.

So I decided to keep the original 48V motor and try to double the voltage and carefully monitor the amps so it won’t get too hot. It worked great.

I added a 96V Kelly controller and charger, new DC-DC Converter, re-wired the entire car… and Bingo!!! The car now works GREAT..

I can get around 55 mhp without pushing the car, it’s pretty good driving too, get really good acceleration and I am about 60 miles range right now.

That is using the original batteries that came with it.. and they’re 3 years old… they were left discharged for couple of years… so if I get a hold of brand new batteries, that range will increase a lot.

I am posting some pictures of the car… so if you’re interested in knowing more about these EV’s please send me an email.

I just met a gentleman in Bonne Terre, Missouri; he is from Farmington, MO with the Electric Car Company. He sells and tests these Miles ZX 40's. He showed me a little circuit board that he says will shift the 48 volt system at a lower RPM. He also talked about a Electric Powered Air Conditioning system that he thinks will revolutionize the industry. It uses a Peltier plate and super capacitors.

I know them.. Tony and Ron.. they're really good people. that's where I got my ZX40 from.

Tony is one of the most talented man I have ever met...

My next project, (after coming back from Deployment) will be adding an A/C to this car.

Hi folks..

Just an update.. The Miles ZX40 is going to be upgraded again.. probably using Trojan T-105 Batteries... I am hoping to get a good range out of it. I am also experimenting with a Capacitor bank ...

I will post pictures when it's done.

Hope to get 100+ miles range.

Marcos.
